Culligan FM-15A Level 3 Faucet Filter Detailed Review
The Culligan FM-15A Level 3 Faucet Filter is an at-home water filtration appliance that fits directly on the faucet and filters water before it comes through. Many customers choose this particular product after disappointment with the build quality of similar products from Pur and Brita. These customers report being pleased with the Culligan faucet filter’s durability, although they do report that the taste isn’t quite as clean as that of the competitors.
As a filter kit, this product is designed to improve the taste, appearance, odor, purity, and healthfulness of tap water. It is designed to reduce lead, chlorine, and other impurities that affect taste and odor, as well as giardia and cryptosporidium, two types of cyst that are often found in water and can cause illness.
The Culligan faucet filter works through two separate filtering mechanisms: one, a very fine filter, literally catches impurities by preventing them from passing through. The second element features tiny pieces of carbon, which bond to additional impurities, preventing their passing through as well. Filters need to be replaced after approximately 200 gallons of use.
Design-wise, the Culligan FM-15A Level 3 Faucet Filter is excellent. It toggles between filtered water (for drinking) and regular water (for dishes, cleaning, etc.), like other faucet filters. But unlike its competitors, this filter ‘defaults’ to standard tap water. When you toggle it to the filtered setting, it stays on until you shut off the water, at which point it returns to unfiltered water. This prolongs the life of the filter for two reasons: Firstly, you’re only using the filter when you need filtered water. Secondly, you will not accidentally run hot water (which can damage the filter) through the filter simply because it was left on from previous use. The filter kit is easy to install and comes with adaptors that fit most, but not all, kitchen faucets.
The main customer complaints about the Culligan FM-15A Level 3 Faucet Filter have to do with taste and water speed. In general, water from this Culligan faucet filter is agreed to taste better than raw tap water, but not quite as good as water filtered through similar products from other brands. For most customers, the price and build quality outweigh the slight difference in taste. In terms of speed, the Culligan FM-15A Level 3 Faucet Filter does slow down water speed to some extent, both when the filter is activated and even when it’s not.
Bottom line: The Culligan FM-15A Level 3 Faucet Filter is easily mounted on most kitchen faucets and toggles between tap water and filtered water, with tap water as the default setting to prolong filter life. This filter reduces lead, chlorine, cysts, and other impurities and improves taste, appearance, odor, and purity. Taste-wise, it’s a notch below some competitors, but most owners find that the build quality and price still make it a better buy.
